Norm Macdonald – Lucky 7s Joke
Late Night with Conan O'Brien · Aired Unknown
Why this bit hits
The Norm Macdonald – Lucky 7s Joke is a delightful excursion into Norm Macdonald's distinctive shaggy dog style. The premise, common in his longer jokes, involves a seemingly straightforward narrative that progressively piles on increasingly absurd and unnecessary details. Here, it revolves around a man with an extraordinary run of luck involving the number seven. Norm's commitment to building this elaborate, improbable scenario is what immediately engages the audience, drawing them into a world where coincidence defies all logic.
Norm's deadpan delivery is paramount to the joke's success. He recounts each miraculous encounter with the number seven birthdays, lottery wins, horse races, and more with an unblinking sincerity that makes the listener question their own grasp of reality. The humor arises from the sheer scale of the coincidences and Norm's insistence on treating them as ordinary occurrences. Conan O'Brien's reactions, often a mix of disbelief and quiet amusement, perfectly complement Norm's performance, providing a live audience proxy for the incredulity that the bit elicits.
The true brilliance of this bit, like many of Norm's shaggy dog jokes, is the anti-climax. After building up such an intricate and seemingly meaningful string of events, the punchline often deflates the tension in an unexpected way, or simply points out the obvious absurdity. The "Lucky 7s" joke works by making the audience anticipate a grand, profound revelation related to the number, only to deliver a punchline that is either hilariously mundane or turns the entire premise on its head. It’s a masterclass in comedic misdirection, where the journey through the ridiculous is far more entertaining than any conventional destination.
"So he bets all his money on number seven, and the horse comes in... seventh."
